Overview
Extended school year (ESY) services are special education and related services that are provided to a student with a disability beyond the regular school year (during the summer) in accordance with the student’s IEP.
Oakland Unified School District offers ESY when a student with an IEP demonstrates greater than expected regression of skills over a long school break and shows limited ability to relearn the skills, or when the student is at a critical stage of development such that an interruption would have lasting impact on IEP goal progress. For students with profound disabilities, ESY is offered to maintain progress toward goals that are essential to the student’s continued progress.
The need for ESY services must be determined annually and on an individual basis by the IEP team. ESY is not a means to develop or enhance new skills and is not a substitute for other summer learning experiences that may be available through OUSD’s general education program. Your student’s ESY services are outlined in their IEP.
ESY programs and services are located across the district. Your student’s ESY service location may not be at the same school as during the regular school year. ESY location is assigned by the district. You will be notified of your student’s ESY location approximately one month before the start date.
For OUSD K-YA special education programs and services, please note that you have the right to decline Special Education services and participate in any general education summer learning programs for which your child qualifies.
If you would like to decline Special Education ESY services and enroll in a general education program, such as credit recovery, summer bridge programs, or general summer school, please contact summerlearning@ousd.org. Alternatively, you may ask the Administrative Assistant at your child’s school to change your application type in our district’s online system.
